Carnelian is an orange semi-precious stone, a silica mineral, and also a form of chalcedony. The rusty, orange colouring is due to the presence of iron oxide during the minerals formation. The Romans discovered that hot wax didn’t adhere to it, this made it invaluable for imprinting seal rings.
