Insects in Amber/Copal
Fossilised Insects in Amber
Amber isn’t a stone but instead is the fossilised sap or resin from ancient trees. The earliest Amber is over 300 million years old dating back to the Carboniferous period. The vast majority of the Amber found today is well under 80 million years old. The insects became trapped in the Amber when it was a sap and trickled down the tree trunk. Incredibly, once trapped these insects, spiders, leaves and even small reptiles are preserved, forever. The majority of Fossilised Insects in Amber that we have for sale are preserved in Copal Amber. Copal Amber is classified as a form of Amber that is less than 35 million years old. In other words, ‘Young Amber’.
