Marine Reptiles
In the region of 240 million years ago the first dinosaurs were walking the earth, whereas in the oceans, a new type of creature was beginning to evolve. These new creatures are known as the marine reptiles. Although oceans cover the majority of the worlds surface, dinosaurs were never able to evolve into sea dwellers. The oceans were home to another entirely different group of predators. During the course of the next 150 million years we saw the arrival of numerous and diverse species both large and small. The diet of these marine reptiles was one of fish, cephalopods and various other vertebrates. Among these were the plesiosaurs, marine creatures with long necks whose appearance was much like the imaginary ‘Loch Ness Monster’. The ichthyosaurs, were fast swimming sleek predators. These extremely agile and streamlined creatures had the appearance of dolphins and sharks. The mosasaurs, were more like huge monitor lizards, similar in appearance to the komodo dragon. In addition there were also creatures like early crocodiles and sea turtles. These creatures went on to evolve into the crocodiles and turtles seen today.
