Lapis Lazuli is a beautiful and iconic semi-precious stone from Afghanistan. This beautiful stone is from the mines in the Kokcha valley, North Eastern Afghanistan. These mines have been producing high grade gemstones for nearly 6000 years. Lapis Lazuli is a metamorphic rock containing lazurite. Lapis Lazuli also frequently contains specks of iron pyrites and calcite. It was said that the deep blue of Lapis Lazuli represented the celestial night sky. The tiny flecks and flashes of pyrite within it represented the sparkling stars. The name Lapis derives from Latin word lapis meaning stone. While Lazuli derives from the Persian word lazhward meaning blue.
