Australian Opal Pendant, set in Sterling Silver
This lovely Australian Opal Pendant has an elegant 925 Sterling Silver setting with a hallmark on the back . The colours within this pair of opals are really eye catching, reds, yellows greens and blues. It isn’t easy to do justice to these lovely opals in my photos. Doublets are made from two layers of opal, a layer of colourful precious opal and a second layer of ‘potch’ or black opal. This gives the gemstone strength and helps amplify the beautiful colours within the opal. Beware of synthetic opals masquerading as real opals online. A lot of opals for sale online are synthetic and are quite different from ‘real’ opals.
Opal can come in a whole range of colours ranging from black to white and virtually every colour in between. Apart from the different colours opals can be transparent, translucent or opaque. These variations are due to different conditions during the formation of the stone.
Metaphysically, opal is the birthstone for October and was once regarded as the ‘gemstone of royalty’. These days people often refer to opals as ‘seductive’ and are associated with love, passion and desire. It is also a very protective stone that can enhance creativity, and optimism.
