Freshwater Pearls are ‘cultured pearls’ produced by freshwater mussels, ‘farmed’ in a sustainable way. They can be a variety of colours ranging from pure white, yellow, pink and also purple in a variety of pastel shades. Several different types of freshwater mussel (bivalve) produce freshwater pearls. The freshwater mussels secrete nacre which gradually over the course of several years will produces the freshwater pearl. The pearls come from a variety of countries including Scotland, the USA, Japan and also China.
