Purbeck Stone Chess or Draughts Board 37cm x 37cm square

This Purbeck Stone Chess Board has been hand crafted in one of Dorsets oldest working quarries. A quarry situated in the Isle Of Purbeck, close to the village of Langton Matravers. The polished stone board measures 14 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches square (37 cm x 37 cm). The back has also been finished in green felt material. By using the two contrasting colours of stone from different beds makes this an excellent example of true craftsmanship. This Chess or Draughts Board is something to treasure and additionally being one off piece that would make a superb  and unique gift.

The Isle of Purbeck is located in Southern Dorset bordering the famous Jurassic Coast. This is an area that has been associated with the stone industry for thousands of years. There were quarries operating here in Roman times. The different beds of stone all have individual characteristics and also a considerable variety of colours. The names of these beds which are often contain numerous fossils have iconic names like Roach, Thornback and Downsvien. The beauty of Purbeck stone unlike numerous other stone found in the UK is it ability to take a high polish. Purbeck Stone in all its forms is very hard and durable. It is a stone that can be found in important historic buildings and also cathedrals throughout the UK.
