Carnelian is a translucent, orange, semi-precious stone. The soothing nature of this autumnal pastel shade is quite superb, and also very calming. The ‘rusty’ orange colouring is due to the presence of iron oxide during the formation of the mineral. As with other forms of chalcedony its use in carvings and jewellery goes back thousands of years. The Romans discovered that hot wax didn’t adhere to it, this made it invaluable for imprinting seal rings.
