Fossilised Wood
Fossilised Wood from the araucaria Tree
Fossilised Wood or ‘Petrified Wood’ as its also known, is literally wood that over millions of years has been turned into stone. Trees first appeared nearly 400 million years ago, they were mostly coniferous trees related to those we have growing today. American scientists have identified three distinct species of tree that were growing 385 million years ago. One of them the archaeopteris had fern like leaves, and roots up to 11 metres long. The wood that we have for sale is mostly from the araucaria tree otherwise down as the ‘Monkey Puzzle’ tree. Incredibly this species still grows today in Madagascar, over 200 million years after these gorgeous fossils were formed.
