This Extra Large Fluorite Point is 14.5cm tall, and would make a stand-out display piece in any mineral collection. It has been highly polished and contains colourful ripples of green together with bands of clear crystal with gorgeous subtle bands of pale purple.
Fluorite is also know as fluorspar, and belongs to the halide family of minerals. It is the mineral form of calcium fluoride. The actual word fluorite comes from the Latin word ‘fluere’, meaning to flow. It is an unusual mineral because it can be found in a such a vast range of beautiful colours. Depending on the impurities present it can be almost any colour, from clear to black and white. Other colours include blue, green, red, yellow and brown. Fluorite comes from a number of countries, with the largest producers including South Africa, China and Mexico. Additionally there are a number of deposits in the UK including the famous ‘Blue John’ mines in Derbyshire.
