Cornish Serpentine Pot with Lid from the Lizard Peninsular
This Superb Cornish Serpentine Pot with matching lid comes from the Lizard peninsular on the southern tip of Cornwall. The exceptional green and red colours in this pot together with bands of contrasting white make this a work of art. Apart from the various shades of green, pastel green to dark green, there are patches of ruby red. These colours are typical of the Serpentine that comes from the area between Coverack and Kynance Cove. The Serpentine here is a metamorphic rock that was formed over 300 millions of years ago several kilometres below the earths surface. Cornish Serpentine has been used by humans for thousands of years. It was only in the 1800’s that serpentine was produced commercially in a number of small workshops.
Serpentine is an attractive green stone that often has a mottled appearance. Cornish Serpentine is different from other varieties from other parts of the world. It is famous for the stunning ‘mottled’ shades of green, red and grey with contrasting seams and the fact that it can also be polished to a beautiful sheen much like marble. One normally associates the Geology of Cornwall with granite and slate so this makes a dramatic contrast to the Serpentine on the Lizard peninsular The actual name serpentine derives from the word ‘serpentinus‘ which means ‘serpent rock’. The serpentine subgroup of minerals are classified as polymorphous and there are twenty different varieties. These different varieties are mostly opaque but also translucent, in various shades of green.
