Shona Marble African Carving, Hight; 22.5cm Weight 2.6 Kilos

This Shona Marble African Carving is a wonderful work of art. Its subject, the bust of a distinguished gentleman has been very skilfully carved by a master craftsman in Zimbabwe. The mottled dark green stone has contrasting paler bands running through. The face and neck of the carving have been highly polished and it has a flat base. The remainder of the of the stone has been left in its natural state. This is a substantial carving and stands 22.5 cm high and weighs 2.6 kilos (5.7 pounds). Carvings of this quality are regarded as very collectable.

It has been carved by a member of Zimbabwe’s Shona, a multi-clan group of people. Although primarily from Zimbabwe where they form the majority, there are also Shona in South Africa and Mozambique. This is Zimbabwe’s  largest ethnic group and they are famous for their rich artistic heritage. The Shona people produce a wide range of traditional crafts. Apart from their wonderful ability to carve stone they are equally famous for their pottery and intricate ironwork.
