Gemstone Carvings
Gemstone Carvings
We have always had rather a soft spot for gemstone carvings, for one thing it goes without saying, no two are ever the same. There is such a beautiful range of colours, patterns and textures to be found in natural minerals and crystals. These present both a gift and a challenge, but also a wonderful opportunity to integrate them into their work of art. Artists and sculptures have been carving stone for thousands of years. The beauty of something ‘carved in stone’ is that in theory, it is there for ever. Every stone carving could and indeed should be a record of our time, an heirloom for future generations.
Down here in ‘deepest Dorset’ they still dig Purbeck and Portland stone. Additionally, just north of the Dorset border they still quarry the golden Ham Stone. Over the years I have worked with all of these different stones. I sometimes visit these quarries, and when I do I always find it reassuring to see craftsmen working and carving the stone. Admittedly these days they might have powerful hand tools to assist them in the work. But nevertheless they are just as skillful as they were in years gone by. A lot of the work in the quarries nowadays is restoration work, work to old buildings, churches and cathedrals where acid rain has eaten into the original stonework. Yes, it’s indeed reassuring to see these ancient skills surviving in this, the internet age.
