This attractive slice of Lewisian Gneiss rock is from the Outer Hebrides. This is one of the oldest rocks in the world and the oldest in the UK. This specimen is a delightful mottled green colour and has been polished on both sides. The rock found on the North West coast of Scotland and Isles of Lewis, Harris Skye and Mull date back to the ‘Archaean & Paleoproterozoic age 3 – 1.7 billion years ago. The Lewisian Gneiss complex is a mixture of many different minerals that include Quartz, Feldspar & Epidote. This colourful banding in this rock is due to the intense heat and pressure when this rock was formed deep within the Earths crust. Lewisian Gneiss gets its name from the Island Of Lewis/Harris the largest island in the Outer Hebrides Archipelago.
