Marble is a metamorphic rock made up of carbonate minerals such as calcite and dolomite. The original rock has been subjected to high temperatures and the subsequent chemical changes cause the rock to recrystallise. It frequently includes other minerals including quartz, mica, pyrite and also iron oxides. The actual word ‘marble’ comes from the word ‘marmaros’ the Ancient Greek word meaning shining crystalline stone. Marble is a very hard mineral at number 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness. This and its ability to take an excellent polish has meant its popularity for fine sculptures, carvings and also statues goes back thousands of years.
The marble originates from Pakistan, an area in the foothills of the Himalayas. We include a tea-light and the Elephant weighs 1.59 kilos in its box.
