The Reclining Buddha represents the historical Buddha about to enter the parinirvana. This is an iconic theme in Buddhist art. Lapis Lazuli is a beautiful ‘midnight blue’ semi-precious stone from North Eastern Afghanistan. The mines in the remote Kokcha valley have been producing Lapis Lazuli for 6000 years, with these mines producing 95% of the worlds Lapis Lazuli. From there the stone was sent on the ancient silk route to markets in Europe and North Africa.
